My time as Composer-in-Residence with Young Adelaide Voices was full of joy in 2019, and full of challenges in 2020 when the pandemic made it unsafe to sing together in person. While writing this summary in 2024, thinking back to 2019 is quite difficult – there was so much momentum for choral singing in Adelaide at the time, and we had absolutely no idea what was coming.
I was fortunate enough to have my activity in 2019 supported by a Carclew Fellowship, including mentorship from some wonderful composers (Paul Rissmann, Annie Kwok, and Callie Wood), a tour to Sydney (with a premiere of one of my new pieces in the iconic Opera House concert hall – Mirror mirror, after Erin-Claire Barrow’s feminist retelling of Snow White), and a tour to Alice Springs = amazing. Then, by April 2020, I was attempting to host real-time singing workshops over Zoom = not amazing.
Despite the challenges, these brilliant young singers and I made meaningful work together, under the fearless leadership of Christie Anderson. Thank you, all!
